Suggest เป็น verb แปลว่า “แนะนำ” คล้ายกับ Recommend แต่จะดูเป็นทางการน้อยกว่า Recommend หรือแปลว่า “ทำให้นึกถึง” หรือ “บอกเป็นนัย” วิธีการใช้ในประโยคเหมือนกับ Recommend
กรณีที่ 1) มีประโยคย่อยหรือ clause ตามหลัง suggest
She suggested (that) he forgive his friend. เธอแนะนำว่าเขาควรให้อภัยเพื่อนของเขา that จะมีหรือละไปก็ได้
หลักสำคัญคือ verb ในประโยคย่อยต้องอยู่ใน base form (verb ช่อง 1) ซึ่งจะไม่มีการเติม s/es/ed ใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น ในที่นี้คือ forgive เช่นเดียวกับการใช้ Recommend ในการจำหลักนี้ อาจมองว่ามีการละ should ซึ่งอยู่หน้า verb ออกไป แต่ verb ยังคงต้องเป็น base form อยู่ตามเดิม ซึ่งอันที่จริงจะเก็บ should ไว้ก็ได้แต่ไม่นิยม ซึ่งอาจแล้วแต่บริบท
She suggested (that) he (should) forgive his friend.
ถ้าต้องการละ he ให้เปลี่ยน verb เป็น Gerund (การเปลี่ยน verb เป็น noun ด้วยการเติม ing) ประโยคจะกลายเป็น She suggested forgiving his friend.
ถ้าต้องการคง he ไว้ แต่เก็บรูป Gerund ไว้ ให้เปลี่ยน he เป็น Possessive adjective ซึ่งก็คือ his แล้วบวกด้วย Gerund จะกลายเป็น She suggested his forgiving his friend.
I suggested that we ask someone for directions, or we’ll get lost. ฉันแนะนำว่าเราควรถามเส้นทางจากคนอื่น ไม่อย่างนั้นเราจะหลงทาง
กรณีที่ 2) ไม่มีประโยคย่อยหรือ clause ตามหลัง suggest
She suggested meeting him to apologize. เธอแนะนำการไปพบเขาเพื่อขอโทษ (เธอแนะนำให้ไปพบเขาเพื่อขอโทษ) ตัวอย่างด้านบน meeting เป็น Gerund รูปประโยคเหมือนกับ She suggested forgiving his friend. ด้านบน
หลักสำคัญคือ ห้ามใช้ suggest + TO + verb จะใช้ She suggested to meet him to apologize. ไม่ได้ She suggested Somchai to meet him to apologize. ก็ไม่ได้
She suggested a book to me. เธอแนะนำหนังสือให้ฉันเล่มหนึ่ง สามารถแปลงประโยคให้อยู่ในรูป Subject + verb + กรรมตรง (indirect object) + กรรมรอง (direct object) ได้ จะกลายเป็น She suggested me a book. a book เป็นกรรมตรง (เพราะเธอแนะนำหนังสือ ไม่ใช่แนะนำ “ตัวฉัน”) me เป็น กรรมรอง
His manner suggested a lack of interest. กิริยาท่าทางของเขาบอกเป็นนัยว่าเขาไม่สนใจ
She has applied for a lot of jobs recently, which suggests that she is not altogether happy with her position. เธอสมัครงานไว้หลายที่เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ ซึ่งบ่งบอกว่าเธอไม่มีความสุขกับตำแหน่งงานของเธอ (หรือจุดที่เธออยู่) เลย
A cloud suggests a mushroom. เมฆก้อนหนึ่งทำให้นึกถึงเห็ด (รูปร่างเหมือนเห็ด)
A silence suggested disapproval. การนิ่งเงียบบอกเป็นนัยถึงการไม่ชอบ ไม่ยอมรับ
